Wake up early and put on your hiking boots, Saturday, 6 February 2010, as students against LNG hike in the Mt. Hood National Forest and gather for a planning meeting in Portland.
Liquified natural gas (LNG) is looming on the Oregon horizon.
Three terminals and 600 miles of pipeline are the subject of antagonism for the organizers of the hike and retreat, who include members of Cascade Climate Network and Columbia Riverkeepers. They staunchly oppose the LNG proposals that will emit greenhouse gases, fragment forest ecosystems and farms, and have numerous incalculable impacts.
The focus is on getting students involved in promoting clean renewable energy solutions instead of expanding fossil fuel use in Oregon.
The fight for clean energy is a relentless one in Oregon. The coal fired plant at Boardman, forest biomass, and liquified natural gas are all controversial enterprises with big plans in the near future. Weighing out the advantages and drawbacks of each option really put the fat in the fire, in Oregon.
Luckily, there are many avenues for engagement, such as this one. For more information, check out HeyNWNatural.org.
