Every year the Cascade Climate Network organizes a Lobby Day in Salem, to let Oregon legislatures know youth support environmental bills. The 2010 Lobby Day will be Tuesday, February 9th. No prior experience lobbying is required - the CCN Lobby Day team will make sure you have all the information you need. The Lobby Day organizer team will set up the meetings, so all you have to do is show up on time!

On Feb 9th, you'll have the chance to meet with your state senator and representative in Salem, and talk to them about 3-4 bills the CCN has prioritized. Our lobbying priorities for this year are:

1) We are FOR House Bill 3613. This bill would permanently ban offshore oil and gas drilling in Oregon's territorial waters. The bill is sponsored by Ben Cannon, one of our best (and youngest!) environmental champions in the legislature. More information on this bill is available House Bill 3613

2) We are AGAINST Senate Bill 1020. This bill is similar to the "LNG fast-track bill" which we defeated in summer of 2009. SB 1020 would allow LNG companies to apply for permits to begin infrastructure projects on private land without the landowners' permission. Find out more about this bill from Columbia Riverkeeper
3) We are FOR a bill supported by 1000 Friends of Oregon (need to find out the official bill number), which would require major urban areas in Oregon to develop a plan to reduce greenhouse emissions from transportation - in other words, lessen dependence on cars. There's a bit more info on this issue at http://www.friends.org/issues/transportation, and the attached pdf has lots more facts about the bill.

4) Optionally, for those who want to lobby on forest issues, there's a bill you can lobby AGAINST that would sanction burning of forest biomass as a "renewable" fuel source. If you'd like to lobby on this bill, please email Samantha Chirillo at schirill@uoregon.edu for more information.

Finally, we will also hopefully be scheduling a meeting on the 9th with Kate Brown, Oregon Secretary of State, to talk about opposing LNG. Everyone's welcome to come to that, and we'll keep you posted.
If you'd like to join students and youth from campuses and communities around Oregon to lobby on these priorities on Feb 9th, please fill out the registration spreadsheet.
