Charles Moore not only discovered the Pacific gyre -  he decided to do something about it. He formed the Algalita Marine Research Foundation which conducts research on the gyre and educates the public.

Currently, Moore is making plans for a 2010 expedition to the North Atlantic Gyre, along with Pangaea Explorations and Livable Legacy.
