Oil rig Deepwater Horizon sinks into the Gulf of Mexico after fire breaks out
- Deepwater Horizon caught fire Tuesday night at about 10 p.m. No word yet on what caused the explosion
- Around 336,000 gallons - 8,000 barrels - per day crude was burning/spilling out
- Coast Guard is still searching for 11 crew members, 115 accounted for, 3 in critical condition. Weather conditions favorable for search
- Plans to cap well to mitigate pollution
- A federal lawsuit was filed Wednesday alleging the companies connected to the oil rig explosion were negligent.
- Coast Guard trip to the rig in January found no safety violations
Update, 4/23:
- Coast Guard says “little hope” of finding the 11 missing crew members
- There is a 1 mile x 5 mile oil slick. Coast Guard says if the well is still leaking, it could be a major oil spill.
