Incredible Plastic Boat to Explore Great Garbage Patch
TENTHMIL has been bringing plenty of attention to the all the ocean gyre garbage patches lately.
And we’re not the only group that’s doing something about it. Plastiki, a recycled plastic boat created by the group Adventure Ecology will make a three month, 11,000 mile voyage from San Francisco to Sydney, Australia. On the way, they hope to pass the northwest Pacific Gyre Garbage Patch in an attempt to draw attention to this growing problem.
The Boat floats on 12,000 recycled plastic bottles filled with carbon dioxide. It has a mast made from an irrigation pipe and a plastic sail. Everything about this boat is about making use of waste. David de Rothschild, the Plastiki expedition founder, had this to say about his dream boat come true, “I think the very simple message is that it’s time that we beat waste, and we start to look at it as a resource.”
