Protesters Arrested in Senate Office Building for Banner Drop

The Dirksen Senate office building, murmuring in Monday morning business, was hardly fazed when three young activists deployed a defiant banner in the north entrance atrium around 11:00 am.

Hoisted, amusingly, by helium balloons, the banner drew some dumbfounded looks and put a pause in a few humdrum workdays; it was also noticed by the Washington press.  The banner read,

Lisa Murkowski.  Happily matched since 2004.

with the names of companies Exxon Mobil, Chevron, and Southern Company.

The tongue-in-cheek campaign Polluter Harmony, modeled on dating sites, describing itself as “the #1 matchmaking site for polluters, industry lobbyists, and politicians.”

The three activists identified themselves to TENTHMIL as working in support of Polluter Watch, a Washington, D.C. based organization that aims to steer public attention toward certain congresspersons’ unsavory ties to monied interests.

The compliant protestors were handcuffed and detained by Capitol Police.  They will be charged with unlawful conduct.

(The non-violent protest was not affiliated with Alliance for Appalachia’s Week in Washington event. )
