When I first heard the news that General Motors had failed in its bid to sell off Hummer to a Chinese automaker and was instead shutting down the brand, I was both sad for the struggling American company and happy for the earth’s atmosphere.
The New York Times reported on Wednesday that the Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Company had been in discussions since last June to take over production of GM’s least fuel-efficient vehicle.
G.M. said only that its planned sale of Hummer to the Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Company “cannot be completed,” without giving a reason, but the $150 million deal had been stalled as the companies awaited approval from the Chinese government.
What went wrong? Reuters reports it was Hummer’s gas-guzzler image that sunk it: “Analysts say that deal failed to win regulatory approval in part because it did not gel with China’s agenda of curbing pollution.”
But maybe this can give GM an opportunity to change their image. Maybe they can do what Volkswagen did when they brought back a modernized version of the popular Beetle. It may be not that far-fetched an idea considering that as far back as December, 2006, an “algae-fueled Hummer” won the L.A. Auto Show prize for best environmentally-friendly concept.
