On February 25, 2010 some brilliant minds gathered in New York City to celebrate and promote Earth-friendly innovations at The Greener Gadgets Conference.
The conference featured an amazing spectrum of innovative ideas, from energy-saving devices to innovations for the food industry that could really help minimize the impact of human consumption on our planet.
All of these ideas are great, but the gadgets that really appeal to me are the personal generators. These machines are harnessing human motion in innovative ways and using the energy captured to power the very tech toys we all adore. How nifty is that?
It really is possible to stay on top of all the technology trends and embrace a greener future – let’s look at some of the devices that are making that dream a reality.
This is a bike rack that generates electricity. The system comes with a super-efficient rechargeable energy storage unit and a USB hub that is fully charged after a half hour ride and can power up any USP appliance. They say a two-mile bike ride is enough to power up the average smarthphone. The unit is about the size of a computer mouse, and can be put in your pocket after charging for additional portability. That means you can bike out to the nature preserve, charging your removable storage unit as you do, then remove the unit and take it with you on your hike. It’s a truly innovative way to escape the energy grid.
This is a computer mouse made of recycled and recyclable parts that uses the small motions of right and left clicking and the larger action of rolling along the mouse pad to recharge itself. It also has a nifty kind of arts and crafts look. No batteries to replace!
An innovative glider-style chair, which generates electricity when the seated person glides and rocks in it. It’s pretty compact, and comes with an adjustable design so that it can be widened into a bench; the back also reclines. The energy is stored in a battery for standard USB charging, and the entire thing folds flat for convenient storage. I like the notion of sitting on my butt and making electricity, so this is on my list of new favorite gadgets for 2010.
Here’s a rocking horse that is both an adorable toy and an educational tool that highlights how electricity is made. The motion moves magnets in the rocker part of the horse, which then creates electricity; the horse is designed out of see-through plastics so the child can see the process in action. The handles of the rocking horse are removable LED flashlights - totally adorable. I’m just wondering if they can make an entire fleet of these things to power my LED TV soon!
The way we create - and play with - our power is rapidly changing. Human innovation is launching us into a new era of people-powered digital fun. I didn’t even begin to talk about some of the wearable solar gear that’s hitting the market all over the country, but it’s out there… these days you can power your iPhone by just catching some rays.
Modern engineering integrates ecological design from the birth of the product until after it’s discarded (and please discard them responsibly). Take an off-the grid challenge and see for yourself!
