The story of Stuff on “Colbert Report”

Annie Leonard is the renowned creator of the video “The Story of Stuff”, which has been seen by 10 million people around the world.  She recently authored a new book, The Story of Stuff, (guess what it’s based on?) and promoted it on Tuesday’s episode of the Colbert Report.

Incase you haven’t seen her video, here are her environmentlal facts in a nutshell-

Reckless use of energy:

There are over 100,000 synthetic chemicals in use in commerce today.
In the US, our industries admits to using 4,000,000,000 pounds of toxic chemicals a year.
99% of the stuff we harvest, mine, process, transport, 99% of the stuff we run through the system, is trashed within 6 months.

Depraved environment:

Where I live, in the United States, we have less than 4% of our original forests left.
40% of the waterways have become undrinkable…
We have 5% of the worlds population, but we are using 30% of the worlds resources and 30% of the worlds waste.
If everybody consumed at US rates, we would need three to five planets…
75% of global fisheries now are fished at or beyond capacity.
80% of the planets original forests are gone.
In the Amazon alone, we are losing 2000 trees a minute.  That is seven football fields a minute.
