I was born in a barn outside of Eugene, Oregon. I was raised in the West, roaming the hills and streams of my local wild places. I spent my teen years in a Rocky Mountain valley in Montana, where I learned how to work hard, focus on the family, and love the outdoors. Then I returned to Eugene to pursue my college degree, and was shocked by what I learned.
As a student of Archaeology I have studied the rise and fall of many great empires, but I now realize that my descendants face a threat much worse. I believe my children have the right to inherit a planet that’s not on the edge of environmental collapse. My daughter deserves to wade barefoot at a local river; not strap her feet into rubber shoes and hope the fetid water doesn’t splash her face. My sons deserve to hunt, fish, and gather sustenance for their families in a forest that is healthy. My children deserve the advantages of many generations of evolution, technological advancement, and sacrifice by their ancestors.
I am working to protect the environment because I don’t want my ancestors to be ashamed and my descendants to be disgusted by my inability to do something to protect our planet from ecological devastation.
