In the US I live on a man-made - or man-adjusted - island in the San Francisco Bay Area that was once a naval air station. In South Africa I live in a rural area undergoing huge industrial development. I’ve learned—and continue to learn—a lot about restoring our earth from these two locations!
I am also author or Long Time Passing: Mothers Speak about War and Terror, sharing stories of those in the war zones of the Middle East, Central Asia, and the US.

To some it's a sacred connection to ancestors and an opportunity to restore the land and traditional ceremonies; to those that participated in the decade-long planning and building of the solar generated Eco-Center it means serving and educating the public. Most of all, it means Heron's Head Park is spreading hope.

At it's peak in 1945, Alameda was a bustling Naval Air Station that had a military and civilian work force of over 18,000. There were 1,513 housing units, berthing space at two piers for aircraft carriers, and a Seaplane Lagoon. Today, habitat restoration group Friends of Alameda Wildlife Refuge works to restore habitats for the area's endangered California Least Tern and many other native species that once thrived there.

A dream worth fighting for, the restoration of a badly treated piece of land with the end goal of a city park, Jean Sweeney never stopped fighting and ten-years later the battle has been won.
